It has been a few day since I last had the chance to write anything in my journal. They have been eventfull days, to say the least.

Where I had left off, we had juist found the captured villagers inside the drow fortress and we were about to head out. Well, we fought our way out of the castle. These fights almost proved too much for Khelgar and Varus, but we all pulled through. We were then confronted with the question what to do next. We had gotten the villagers out, but unless we accompanied them back to the village they would simply be recaptured by the drow in a few hours. On the other side we still had to locate and retrieve the lost relic.

We decided to save he villagers first. One of the captives was a lord who had an estate two days travel from the drow fortress. We started to head that way, and although we made it, we were followed and harassed by drow the entire time. During these two days I talked to some prisoners and found out that they had no information about any artifact or holy relic captured or used by the drow. Neither did they know anything about any ritual that the drow were perfoming. I did learn that the head honcho, the leader of these underground elven bastards had left the fortress and was travelling back toward their underground capital.

Once at the manor, which proved a lot smaller and less defendable than anticipated, we decided to prepare for the eventual attack from our drow pursuers. We had captured one of their scouts and our interrogation of him got us some information about how bad our situation really was. It turned out, pretty bad. At least 60 drow were in persuit and were only a few hours behind. We passed out whatever weapons we had and were able to arm about 30 villagers. A quick calculation told me they could handle about 4,3 drow warriors. Maybe. That just left 55,7 for the rest of us. I have read soemwhere that the people of this harsh land are all trained with swords from birth, that they have to learn in order to survive. I guess we got stuck with the lazy villagers who skipped those classes. So much for finding decent sparring partners.

And so we waited. We had prepared our defenses quite well. Archers on the roof, fire-pits to provide light at night… Still, those sneaky drow managed to get inside of our defenses without difficulty. It’s those damn invisibility potions they have.

We were fortunate however. They did not attack with 60 drow. Not even with 40, or 10. Only 4 came that night. Either thay gravely underestimated us, or they had better things to do. My guess is, they are continuing whatever foul plan they have with the relic. We have to get that back.

Dealing with the 4 drow infiltrators was not hard thanks to Varus who spotted them as they tried to enter the manor. Khelgar and me dealt with them.

We now plan to move the villagers back to their home. It will take another day of travelling to reach the village. I wonder if we can send them ahead without us so we can return to the castle to find the relic. I’ll discuss it with the rest of the group, see what they have to say.

That brings me to my final remark. During our stay at the manor we had captured a drow scout. We interrogated him and several interesting if not also disturbing things came to light. First of all, Khelgar has some kind of history with the drow. A female drow named Sinthoras tricked him in to killing someone. As he tells it, she used mind-controlling magic to make him do it. I have seen him lose control before however, without the use of that kind of magic. He killed a villager at the church the first night we stayed at the village, he attacked me because I made a remark he did not like, and he tried to kill Varus when he refused to let Khelgar kill our prisoner. This makes me question Khelgar’s state of mind and overall stability. The thing is, we need his axe right now and when push comes to shove….I don’t think I can put him down myself. One or two hits with his battleaxe and its on to pharasma’s boneyard.

And then one more quick word about Khelgar’s fight with Varus. Khelgar wanted to kill our prisoner out of revenge. Varus wanted to bring him with us to the village to have him tried and brought to justice. Personally, I say kill the bastards. I can understand Varus’ point of view however. Some people hold themselves to higher standards. I can understand Khelgar as well, if I had a bone to pick with these drow I would want to kill him too. I’m just glad I managed to stop them from killing each other. We are going to need all the help we can get to get out of this predicament alive. They can kill each other all they want when I’m back in a tavern with a pint of ale in front of me, a couple of cards in my hand (and my sleave) and Sarayah on my lap. Heh, what did you think? That I had gone all mature on you? I wonder what Gorann would say if he could see me now? I am practically leading this group. Guess I’m not such a waste of time and money after all.

Up to no good


Maybe going north wasn’t such a great idea. I know I was the one who came up with it, and at the time it seemed like the thing to do, but in hindsight….

I don’t like the cold. Brevoy, my homeland, isn’t the warmest of regions but it isn’t like this frozen wasteland we’ve ended up in. Thank the gods that Milura reminded me to buy some fur-coats. Hehe, that’s kind of funny though, a bearlike humanoid creature reminded me to buy a furred cloak. I think mine is even made of bear fur. It goes to show the gods have a good, if not disturbed, sense of humor.

Milura is one of my travel companions. She is a pendarin or something. Like I said, a bear-like humanoid. She says she comes from all the way east. I’ll have to take her word for it. She is nice, inquisitive, loyal as far as I can tell and one hell of a cook. I don’t quite know why she is tagging along, but it gives me someone else to talk to while I’m pulling myself across another mile of snow.

Sarayah is my other companion. Young, quiet, hot. Likeable if not a tad naieve. I helped her escape from the clutches of a green hag. A lot more going on there than I care to talk about right now. Let’s just say she’s another reason I was glad to leave the fairer climes behind.

We should have gone south though. Maybe to Osirion or Katapesh. But I figured that would be too logical. It’s too typical isn’t it? Heading to Katapesh as a refugee. Sounds like it has been done to death. I chose north. Shouldn’t have.

A refugee? Yeah you read that right. I kind of quit school, the hard way, and forgot to return some of my learning aids. Well, that and I stole one of the legendary black blades that normally only end up in the hands of a champion. Running seemed like my best option.

So now me and my motley crew ended up in some ditch town up north. The local jokels were about to have a festival celebrating the winter solstice. We tagged along, drank a pint, sang a song (sorry, hymn), cheered on a cleric as he subdued darkness and tried to bring back the sun. You know, the usual stuff you do at winter solstice.

At first I figured the ritual was a simple religion ceremony to reassure these simple farmers that spring and summer would return, as they do every year. To my surprise an actual cleric and an actual holy relic containing unimaginable divine power appeared on scene. To my even greater surprise the local peasants reacted to this ritual by trying to burn down the church. My companions and I intervened and stopped the probably already drunk, or as it later appeared, possessed townfolk. A definatly already drunk dwarf got mixed up in the fighting. He started yelling, put his beard on fire and then started cutting down the townfolk.

After the first round of chaos had settled down the ritual started again only to be interrupted just in time for the second round of chaos, this time brought to us by hordes of undead. The cleric dropped his holy relic containing unimaginable divine power and so while he went looking for it, me and my companions, the crazy dwarf and an elven archer cleared out the church and it’s belltower.

In the aftermath it seemed the undead had been sent by drow (evil, dark skinned underground elves) who had also killed the cleric, stolen his holy relic containing unimaginable divine power, taken dozens of hostages and slaves from the townsfolk and had turned off the sun.

Yes, they turned off the sun. I didn’t know you could do that. I haven’t read anything about any spell or ritual to turn off the sun. I mean, there are gods of darkness out there, and even they have never turned off the sun. So it must be pretty hard. So off course I immediately offered to hunt down these evil drow, free the townsfolk, return their holy relic containing unimaginable divine power, avenge the town’s cleric and bring back the sun. It’s just the kind of guy I am.

Ok, maybe I am trying to impress a few people, but we started out with the simplest of the above. Hunting down the drow and freeing the townsfolk.

We tracked the drow through the forest, across a river, through some more forest, right in to the hands of a demon. A tough fight later the demon was dead and we were ready to continue tracking the drow through … some more forest, when someone from the Academy showed up. What’s the chance of meeting up with that guy during an ever lasting night, in the middle of an arctic forest miles away from the nearest settlement. He didn’t even sneak up on us, he was waiting for me, ahead of us. Got to give these guys credit, they are good. It’s like they know what’s going to happen.

Anyhow, I got tired of the taunts and banter and my idle attempts to bribe the dwarf. (I swear I am travelling with the only dwarf who cares nothing about gold.) So I attacked and the academy hound killed me.

Seeing as how I am still writing this, I guess it’s not too big of a spoiler when I say I came back to life. The god Erastil, his name be forever praised, made sure my companions found a magic scroll and our cleric, who I now realize I have forgotten to mention completely, used it to bring me back.

After my companions got back control of their emotions (there were so many tears, I got a little emberassed) we continued with our quest. We had to fight our way through several layers of drow defences and finally arrived at their stronghold. Our initial survey of the opposition proved that a direct assault was out of the question, so we used a hidden passage, discovered by our expert thief who we found stepping out of a tree not that much earlier (I suspect some affiliation with a dryad, or maybe she is a newborn treant.)

By using a clever ruse and a magical drow disguise we managed to enter the castle and found the enslaved townsfolk. Now all we have to do is get them out.

And find the holy relic containing unimaginable divine power….

And avenge the town’s cleric…

and bring back the sun.

Nothing is ever easy.



I managed to get some armor and weapons that fits relatively well from an orc I killed just before exiting the tunnels. It’s no match for dwarven craft but it has to do for now.

I decided to go to the nearest human village in order to get some supplies before heading back. They were in the middle of a winter celebration, I have no idea how much time has passed since my banishment, but time will not quench my burning desire for vengeance. I followed the humans into a temple where they were preparing for some sort of ritual, something to do with the sun. I didn’t care much but at least it was warm inside and the tavern was closed.

Suddenly the temple was invaded by a gang of humans armed with torches, intend on burning it and the people inside to the ground. The head priest wagered that they were being mind controlled, I know what that’s like. Sadly the memory of my own experience fueled my rage and I mercilessly cut down the ones I could reach. Part of me regrets it but maybe it’s for the best, at least they are spared the guilt of their actions.

It became pure chaos after that, along with some humans, a half-elf and some kind of bear thing we helped fend off the invaders, which turned out to be a drow raiding party, but not before they managed to steal some sort of artifact from the head priest. Perhaps Torag has not forsaken me completely just yet. I doubt some random foot soldier would know Synthoras but the leader of the group just might point me in the right direction. So I decided to invite myself to the party and if it will get me closer to Synthoras his throat I’ll even endure their jokes.
